ARCHITECT PUBLISHES BOLD NEW DOCKING DESIGN

Lunetta Design published a bold new design for the Docking State Office Building today. Videos and paintings of this new design can be found at www.lunetta.design This new design preserves the existing bones of the original 1954 office building and uses them to create an entirely new, productive, and pleasant environment for hundreds of state employees and their respective agencies.

“As a proud Kansan and Midwesterner, I value practicality, economy, and history, so this design vision takes advantage of our enormous opportunity here to create efficient rent-free space for the state, improve the urban design of the Capitol grounds, and contribute to Kansas’ seat of Government. The original historic curtain walls on the building’s north faces are repaired and preserved in this concept, while the south facing walls are modernized with shaded porches and overhangs, dramatically increasing user comfort and energy efficiency. We can do all this while preserving the building’s original carved stone artwork as well as it’s Kansas legacy of modern architecture.”

- Jeffrey Terrell, Founder and President of Lunetta Design

Lunetta Design’s fresh concept would use the existing floor slabs on the southeast and southwest facing walls as new overhangs to eliminate costly and uncomfortable heat gains in the summer months while letting free heat into the building during the winter when it is desired. An entirely new exterior skin of the building would be installed at these locations. Terrell adds, “I am confident we can create a new Docking Building design which approaches net-zero energy consumption for our fellow taxpayers.”

“My hope is that this design will spur a broad conversation about the huge civic and economic opportunity that is within our grasp at the Docking State Office Building. Accomplishing something great here will take effort from many stakeholders and Kansans of all stripes. Let us not fail the test.”
